Squamish, British Columbia, Canada
About SquamishSquamish is situated at the head of Howe Sound where mountains meet the rivers meet the sea. Known for the famous granite monolith known as the "Cheif" or more precisely Stawamus Cheif, Squamish is a mountain climbers paradise. The Cheif itself is the magma chamber of an ancient volcano and the world's second largest granite monolith. Not only is it a capital for mountaineers, hikers and climbers, but Squamish, nestled on Howe Sound, is also a great spot for water sports. For millenia, the Sko-mish or Squamish people hunted, trapped, fished and raised their families in this flourishing valley. Squamish means Mother of the Wind in Coast Salish which is evident to the winds that pick up in Howe Sound at noon and last until dusk. These predictable winds were named after the area. Known as Squamishes - these winds make Squamish a brilliant location for kite surfing and sailboat racing (and a good workout paddle for those up to it!). There are many ocean coves to be discovered by kayak in Howe Sound as well. Porteau Cove, located south of Squamish, is a provincial park that offers another good launch point and campsite for a kayak trip. The cove itself offers protection from the winds that tend to come up in Howe Sound. Squamish is rich in history and activity. Once a mining town in the early 1900s, the old mine has become the BC Museum of Mining ~ Britannia Beach. If you are looking to go kayaking out of Squamish, we can definitely help with that by setting up a trip for you.
