DO I HAVE TO BE IN MY OWN KAYAK?

No. Our fleet includes single, double and triple boats; your vessel is yours to choose. We usually bring single and double kayaks on every trip so people can try both. Sometimes you want to paddle on your own and other times you may prefer riding with a friend; on our trips you will have the opportunity to try both.

DO I HAVE TO BE IN GOOD PHYSICAL SHAPE?

While previous kayaking experience is not necessary for most of our trips, we definitely recommend that our clients be in good health. People in good physical condition tend to capitalize on the kayaking experience, learning the stroke quickly and enjoying the sense of adventure.

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?

Great food comes with great times at Rising Sun. Our company's guides include professional chefs with years of outback cooking on their resumes. We have a diverse menu custom designed for every trip and most of our meals are healthy, filling and delicious. Several of our meals are vegetarian in nature but we do pack bacon and meats and serve up a fresh catch or two on most trips. To read more about Rising Sun's 5-Star Dining experience....

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ON EVERY TRIP?

It varies. Groups usually are between 4 and 12 people, plus at least 2 guides. We are able to organize personal trips for smaller groups and we are always excited to accommodate larger groups. Are large number of kayaks allows us to accommodate very large groups and we have, in the past, had groups numbering around three-dozen people.

HOW LONG DO WE PADDLE EVERYDAY?

This is evaluated on a trip-by-trip basis. Paddling depends on Rising Sun's assessment of the weather, time and tides. We generally don't paddle more than 4 hours per day and we always stop for lunch.

IS MY CAMERA EQUIPMENT SAFE ON THE TRIP?

Pictures are the best thing you can take on any trip and so it would be a shame to not bring a camera. For those with expensive camera equipment, we recommend that you store it in one of our kayak's watertight compartments, a dry bag or a Pelican waterproof box.

HOW AM I GOING TO KEEP EVERYTHING DRY?

Our kayaks have a number of air-tight compartments for storage. Anything kept inside these areas stays dry as the desert, no matter what conditions we are paddling in. We don't fear keeping our last paid of dry socks, camera equipment or food supply in these storage bins.

IF RENTING A KAYAK, DO WE NEED TO HIRE A GUIDE?

It's recommended but not required, especially for beginning kayakers. Anyone over the age of 18 is allowed to rent our boats and use them without the precense of a guide.

DO YOU LEAD TRIPS OR RENT KAYAKS DURING THE WINTER?

Yes! At Rising Sun, we paddle every week of the year. Snow, rain, sleet or shine; we paddle on. While our multi-day trips to Vancouver Island are not scheduled during the winter, we frequently take day trips and multi-day trips that launch from North Vancouver or the Sunshine Coast.

The areas we paddle are home to some of nature's most amazing animals, depending where you paddle you may see killer whales, sea lions, seals, sea otters, humpback whales, bears, bald eagles, deer or wolves, to name a few.
