Spotting whales off Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast for over a decade!

The waterways we paddle are a popular migration stop for some of the world's most impressive marine mammals. Each year, humpback, grey, and killer whales travel through our oceans on their natural migratory routes between the North Pacific and the Baja Peninsula. At Rising Sun, we have been spotting these whales since we started leading kayak trips in the early '90's. No matter how many whales we have spotted, we still get goosebumps each time we see the dorsal fin of an orca rise from the waters of the Johnstone Strait or a humpback whale breach in the waters off Vancouver Island's west coast. Year after year, we've had incredible success with whale sightings, especially on our Johnstone Strait trip. This passageway near the northern tip of Vancouver Island is home to the world's largest known orca pod and it is our pleasure to take in these magnificent creatures every summer!

Our Adopted Philosophy

"Ric Careless describes "wilderness" as a place, an experience, a tradition, a remembering and a future... it is the very archive of life... the essence of purity. Vast and free, wilderness provides a wild place to stay, a space for solitude. It offers a chance for renewal in Nature, reconnection with the land, and, a reunion with the spirit.

Sea Kayaking in pristine areas can help foster this discovery. For an eager group of kayakers armed with enthusiasm, and yet, a bit of curiousity, equipped with good gear and expert guides, pure eco-adventuring could never feel more like a holy crusade into a new realm, our very heaven on earth."

"Rising Sun Kayaks should be considered one of the best Kayak companies in B.C.. They are very well organized from the day you book your trip to the extensive knowledge of the areas that they explore and right through to the day you say good-bye to friends you met along the way. "

Rainbow on the water

"I've lived in BC my whole life and have taken many boat trips, hiking trips and Kayak trips all over BC, and I must say, taking a multi-day kayak trip up to the Sunshine Coast will be the most pristine, serene and amazing adventure experiences you will ever take that will seeminly transport you into another world and will "reset" your inner self!.
